Our Family History
Our dream to achieve Tikkun-Olam
Winemaking is in the soul of every Persian Jew; this has been true ever since they were freed from Babylon by King Cyrus the Great of the Persian Empire over 2,500 years ago. Ever since then, most Persian Jews made kosher wine at home for Shabbat and high holidays.
Our story begins with the winemaker’s great-grandfather, Nissan ben Yosef. In the late 1800s in Persia (modern-day Iran), he was a textile merchant in the Persian cities of Kashan and Isfahan. His greatest passion was making wine, and with the help of his brothers and children, he distributed his wine to his congregation, family, and friends.
The lineage continued through his son, Yosef ben Nissan, who was also known to recruit his brothers and children in manually crushing grapes and transporting them into five-foot high clay barrels meticulously monitored for optimal taste. This was because there were no wine preservatives available at that time. This process led to a rich amber color and semi-sweetness in the wine.
Down the trail, the following generation had difficulties making wine during Iran’s challenges in the 1970s and 1980s; the art was almost forgotten in the family.
A few decades later, the current winemaker, chose a different path and became a physician. However, he always dreamed of continuing the wine-making legacy of his dad and grandfather. It was not until 2019 when he purchased a vineyard in Temecula Valley, California. He revitalized his family’s winemaking trend and created this fine boutique wine.
